Kochi City Police FIR Status Online - Track, View & Download FIR

Check Kochi City Police FIR Status Online

You can check and download a First Information Report (FIR) registered under Kochi City Police through the official Kerala Police THUNA portal. The FIR Download service allows users to search for a published FIR by entering the FIR number, year of registration, police district and police station.
The current Kerala Police online system separates FIR Download from Application Status. Therefore, if you want to check the status of an online complaint or service request, you should use the THUNA Application Status facility rather than the FIR Download page.

FIR Status vs Complaint Status

These services should be distinguished:

What you want to checkOfficial online facility
Published FIR copy THUNA FIR Download
Online complaint/service request THUNA Application Status

The Kerala Police THUNA portal currently lists Complaint, First Information Reports, Application Status and Grievances Redressal as separate services.

Can I Check the Status of an FIR Online?

The Kerala Police online FIR facility is principally a published FIR search and download service. It is not the same as a live investigation-status tracker.
If you are looking for the status of a complaint or service request submitted through THUNA, use the Application Status facility. If you require information about the investigation of a registered FIR that is not available through the online portal, you may need to contact the concerned police station or investigating officer.

Why Is My Kochi Police FIR Not Available Online?

An FIR may not appear in the online search for several reasons.

1. The FIR has not been published

The Kerala Police portal provides a download facility for published FIRs. If an FIR has not been published, the Download option will not be available.

2. The FIR falls within a sensitive category

The Kerala Police portal refers to the Supreme Court's directions concerning online publication of FIRs and recognises restrictions for sensitive cases, including certain sexual offences, offences relating to insurgency or terrorism, POCSO offences and other sensitive categories.

3. Incorrect details have been entered

Check the:
FIR number
Registration year
Police district
Police station
before searching again.

4. The FIR is outside the online availability period

The current portal states that FIRs from November 2016 onwards are available for downloading through this service.
Does Downloading an FIR Mean the Investigation Is Complete?
No.
Downloading or viewing an FIR online only provides access to the published FIR document. It does not indicate that the police investigation has been completed.
The current criminal procedure framework is governed by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS). Section 173 deals with information in cognizable cases, while Section 175 deals with the police officer's power to investigate cognizable cases.
Accordingly, the availability of an FIR online should not be treated as an indication of the present stage of investigation, filing of a final report or commencement/completion of trial.

Legal Position on FIR Registration

The BNSS, 2023 replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 for the criminal procedure framework from 1 July 2024.
Section 173 BNSS is titled "Information in cognizable cases." The provision also recognises electronic communication for providing information relating to a cognizable offence, subject to the statutory requirements.
Section 174 BNSS deals with information concerning non-cognizable cases and the investigation of such cases.
Therefore, older references to Section 154 CrPC in articles about current FIR registration should be updated to the applicable provisions of the BNSS.

How to Get a Copy if the FIR Is Not Available Online

If you cannot download a Kochi City Police FIR from the online portal:
1. Verify the FIR number and registration year.
2. Confirm that the correct police district has been selected.
3. Confirm the police station.
4. Search again using the correct security code.
5. If the FIR is still unavailable, contact the concerned police station or appropriate police authority.
If a certified copy is required for court proceedings or another legal purpose, an online downloaded copy may not necessarily satisfy the particular requirement. You should obtain the appropriate authenticated/certified copy through the competent authority or court procedure, as applicable.
