Latest law governing FIR registration: BNSS, 2023

The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) came into force on 1 July 2024 and replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 for matters governed by the new law. Section 173 BNSS deals with information relating to cognizable offences.

Section 173 BNSS permits information relating to a cognizable offence to be given to the officer in charge of a police station irrespective of the area where the offence was committed. The provision also recognises giving such information by electronic communication, subject to the statutory requirements.

The statutory right to receive a copy of recorded information and the exact procedural route should be understood with reference to the applicable BNSS provisions, state rules, court directions and the facts of the case. An online portal is a service channel; it does not replace the legal remedies available where police action is required.

What if you cannot find the FIR online?

An FIR may not appear online because of access restrictions, data-entry timing, portal maintenance, sensitive case categories or other administrative reasons. Contact the concerned police station or use the current citizen service provided by Uttarakhand Police.
