West Bengal's online civil-registration services are provided through Janma-Mrityu Tathya. The portal currently provides death-registration services including new registration, application tracking, certificate download, delayed registration, correction, acknowledgement or certificate-number lookup and certificate verification.
How to Track and Download a West Bengal Death Certificate
- Open the official Janma-Mrityu Tathya portal.
Go to the Government of West Bengal civil-registration website. - Select Death → Track Application.
The tracking service asks for the acknowledgement number and the date of death. - Enter the acknowledgement number.
Use the number generated when the death-registration application was submitted. - Enter the date of death.
Enter the date in the format requested by the portal and submit the form. - Check the application status.
If the registration has been approved, proceed to the Death → Download Certificate service available on the official portal. - Save or print the certificate.
Keep the downloaded electronic certificate safely for future use.
Lost the Acknowledgement Number?
The official portal provides a Know your acknowledgement/Certificate No facility for death records. The lookup form can use details such as the deceased's name, family details and mobile number to locate available registration information.

The official verification service supports both QR-code verification and certificate-number verification. For certificate-number verification, select Death, enter the certificate number and date of death, and submit.
Applicable Law and Current Rules
The Government portal currently lists the West Bengal Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 2000 and the West Bengal State Rule Amendment, 2006 in its regulatory framework.
Section 12 of the Act provides for issuance of a certificate of registration after registration of the birth or death. The 2023 amendment, effective from 1 October 2023, modernised the statutory framework and electronic civil-registration system.

Who Issues the Death Certificate?
Under the West Bengal Government's statewide online civil-registration notification, where a death occurs in a Government hospital, the certificate is issued from that Government hospital. For a death in a private clinical establishment, home or another place, the certificate is issued by the concerned local body such as the Municipality, Corporation or Gram Panchayat.
