Income Tax Return e-Filing: Registration, Filing, e-Verification, Password Reset and Rectification

This guide explains the main online services available through the Income Tax Department's current e-Filing portal, including taxpayer registration, Income Tax Return filing, e-verification, password recovery, Net Banking access and rectification of eligible mistakes.

Updated: 4 September 2026

Important: The official e-Filing portal is now incometax.gov.in. The portal currently supports ITR filing for AY 2026-27 and provides integrated services for matters governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961 and the Income-tax Act, 2025, as applicable.

Register on the Income Tax e-Filing Portal

Registration enables eligible users to access online tax services such as filing returns and forms, viewing filed returns, checking tax-related information, responding to notices and using other account-based services. PAN is generally used as the user ID for individual taxpayers.

For current registration and login access, use the official e-Filing portal. Keep your PAN, mobile number, email address and other required details available before starting.

How to e-File an Income Tax Return Online

The e-Filing portal allows eligible taxpayers to prepare and submit Income Tax Returns online or through the applicable utilities made available by the Department. The correct ITR form depends on the taxpayer's status, sources of income and other conditions for the relevant assessment year or tax year.

  • Log in to the official e-Filing portal.
  • Select the relevant return-filing service and applicable year.
  • Choose the correct ITR form and filing mode.
  • Review pre-filled information and enter the required particulars.
  • Validate the return, pay any tax due and submit the return.
  • Complete e-verification within the permitted time.

e-Verify an Income Tax Return

After filing, the return must be verified in the manner permitted by law and the portal. Current e-verification modes include Digital Signature Certificate, Aadhaar OTP, Electronic Verification Code through a bank or demat account, Bank ATM EVC and Net Banking, subject to the applicable prerequisites.

The Department's e-Verify service is available for eligible registered and unregistered users. Where e-verification is not completed electronically, follow the alternative verification process and time limit prescribed for the relevant return.

Forgot Password: Reset Income Tax e-Filing Login

If you cannot access your e-Filing account, use the current password recovery options provided on the official portal. The available recovery method may require identity or account verification through details linked to your taxpayer profile. Use only official portal pages for login, password reset and account recovery.

Access e-Filing Services Through Net Banking

Where supported by your bank and the Income Tax Department's portal, Net Banking may be used as an authentication or e-verification method. Availability depends on the bank, PAN linkage and the facilities enabled for your account. Follow the current portal instructions rather than relying on older bank-specific navigation steps.

Income Tax Rectification Request Online

A rectification request may be used where the applicable law permits correction of a mistake apparent from the record. For proceedings governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961, Section 154 deals with rectification of mistakes apparent from the record. The e-Filing portal provides rectification services for eligible processed returns and orders.

Rectification is not a substitute for filing a revised, updated or belated return where a different statutory remedy applies. Before submitting a request, check the relevant intimation or order, the applicable law for the year concerned and the rectification options shown in your e-Filing account.

This page is a general informational guide. Portal menus, eligibility conditions, statutory timelines and available services can change. For a transaction or filing, verify the current position on the official Income Tax Department portal and consult the applicable law.
