Jharkhand Death Certificate: Apply, Check Status & Download

Current guide to obtaining a death certificate in Jharkhand through JharSewa, including the official service process, required death-proof documents, delayed registration rules and certificate download.

How to Apply for a Death Certificate in Jharkhand

  1. Open the official JharSewa death-certificate service page and review the current requirements.
  2. Visit an authorised kiosk/Pragya Kendra, since the present service page lists Kiosk as the submission mode.
  3. Provide the deceased person's details, date and place of death, applicant details and other particulars requested in the service form.
  4. Submit the correct proof of death according to where the death occurred.
  5. Collect and preserve the acknowledgement or application reference number.
  6. Use the official JharSewa facilities to track the application and download the certificate when issued.

Documents Required for Jharkhand Death Certificate

The current JharSewa service page lists different proof depending on the place of death:

Current Law on Death Registration

Registration of deaths is governed by the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, as amended by the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023.

Section 12 now requires the Registrar, after registration is completed, to provide the prescribed certificate electronically or otherwise, free of charge, within the statutory framework.

Section 10 also deals with notification of deaths and certification of the cause of death. Where applicable, a medical practitioner who attended the deceased during the last illness has duties relating to the medical certificate of cause of death.

Delayed Registration of Death

Under Section 13, delayed registration is subject to different requirements depending on the period of delay. A death reported after the prescribed period but within 30 days may be registered on payment of the prescribed late fee. A death reported after 30 days but within one year requires written permission of the District Registrar or other authorised authority, the prescribed fee, and the prescribed self-attested document.

If the death has remained unregistered for more than one year, registration requires an order of the District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, or an Executive Magistrate authorised by the District Magistrate, after verification and payment of the prescribed fee.

Important Tips

  • Use only the official JharSewa/ServicePlus portal or an authorised Pragya Kendra.
  • Carry the original death-proof document applicable to the place of death.
  • Check the spelling of the deceased person's name, date of death and place of death before submission.
  • Keep the acknowledgement/reference number until the certificate has been issued and downloaded.
  • For deaths not registered within the normal period, follow the delayed-registration procedure under Section 13.
