Meghalaya Stolen Vehicle Search: Check Lost or Second-Hand Vehicle Status

If a vehicle has been stolen in Meghalaya, report the theft to the police without delay. For checking whether a second-hand vehicle is recorded as stolen or involved in crime, citizens can use the Government of India's Digital Police Central Citizen Services, including the Generate Vehicle NOC facility.

How to check whether a vehicle is stolen or involved in crime

  1. Open Digital Police Visit the Government of India Digital Police Portal.
  2. Open Central Citizen Services Select the Central Citizen Services option and proceed to the vehicle-related service.
  3. Select "Generate Vehicle NOC" This service is intended to help citizens ascertain a vehicle's status before purchase, including whether it is recorded as stolen or involved in crime.
  4. Enter available vehicle details Search using one or more identifying particulars such as registration number, chassis number, engine number, vehicle type, make or model, as permitted by the portal.
  5. Review the result Check the returned vehicle status carefully. If the service permits and the requirements are met, generate or download the relevant Vehicle NOC.
  6. Verify before buying a second-hand vehicle An online search is an important precaution, but it should be used along with registration, ownership, insurance and physical vehicle-document verification.

Buyer precaution: Match the chassis and engine numbers physically stamped on the vehicle with the Registration Certificate and other records. A search based only on the registration number may not detect every identity-related problem.

Current law on vehicle theft: BNS, 2023

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) is the current substantive criminal law framework for offences committed on or after its commencement on 1 July 2024.

BNS Section 303 contains the general definition of theft. More specifically, Section 305(b) applies where theft is committed "of any means of transport used for the transport of goods or passengers". The section provides punishment which may extend to seven years, along with fine.

How to report a stolen vehicle in Meghalaya

If your vehicle has been stolen, an online status check is not a substitute for reporting the offence. Contact the police and provide the vehicle registration number, chassis number, engine number, identifying features and the circumstances of the theft.

BNSS Section 173: information relating to the commission of a cognizable offence may be given to the officer in charge of a police station irrespective of the area where the offence was committed. The information may be given orally or by electronic communication, subject to the statutory requirements applicable to electronically communicated information.
