Birth registration in India is governed by the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, as amended by the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023. The 2023 amendment came into force on 1 October 2023 and introduced, among other changes, statutory support for digital registration and electronic delivery of birth and death certificates.
For a person born on or after 1 October 2023, the amended law provides for use of the birth certificate as a single document for proving date and place of birth for specified statutory purposes.
