Current FIR law: Section 173 of BNSS, 2023

The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) is the current principal criminal-procedure law for matters governed by it. It replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 for new proceedings from 1 July 2024, subject to the statutory saving provisions.

Section 173(1) deals with information relating to the commission of a cognizable offence. Such information may be given to the officer in charge of a police station irrespective of the area where the offence was committed.

The information may be given orally or by electronic communication. Where information is sent electronically, the provision requires it to be signed within three days for being taken on record.

Section 173(2) provides that a copy of the information recorded under Section 173(1) shall be given forthwith, free of cost, to the informant or victim.

For the authoritative statutory text, see the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 on India Code.

How to obtain an FIR copy

If the relevant FIR is available through the MP Police Citizen Portal, use the official FIR-status service and follow the current verification process. Any download or print option will depend on what the portal makes available for the particular record.

Statutory right: Section 173(2) BNSS separately provides that a copy of information recorded under Section 173(1) shall be supplied forthwith and free of cost to the informant or victim. Public online access and the statutory copy supplied to an informant or victim are not necessarily the same process.

Indore Police online complaint service

The official Indore Police Complaint Lodging service allows citizens to submit applications concerning matters within Madhya Pradesh police jurisdiction. The official service states that complaint categories include police matters, physical incidents, crimes against women or children, property-related incidents, cybercrime and traffic-related incidents.

Open Complaint Lodging

An online complaint and an FIR are not necessarily the same. Registration of an FIR depends on whether the information discloses a cognizable offence and the applicable legal procedure.
