Important: An online complaint and an FIR are not always the same thing. Whether information results in registration of an FIR depends on the nature of the allegation and the applicable criminal-procedure law. For emergencies, use the national emergency number 112 or contact the nearest police station.

How to lodge an online complaint with Madhya Pradesh Police

The exact screens can change. The safest method is to begin from the official MP Police Citizen Services section and follow the service prompts displayed there.

Open the MP Police website.
Visit mppolice.gov.in and locate Citizen Services.
Select the relevant service.
Choose Complaint Lodge/View, e-FIR, Lost Article Report, Information to Police or another service that matches your matter.
Sign in or complete citizen verification.
Follow the current authentication, registration or OTP instructions shown on the official portal.
Enter incident and complainant details accurately.
Keep the date, place, description of events, contact details and available supporting material ready.
Upload supporting documents where permitted.
Attach relevant screenshots, documents or other evidence only through the official portal and within the permitted format and size.
Submit and save the acknowledgement.
Keep the complaint/FIR reference number, acknowledgement or confirmation message for tracking and future communication.

Current law: FIR information under BNSS Section 173

Section 173(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, effective from 1 July 2024, deals with information in cognizable cases. It permits such information to be given to the officer in charge of a police station irrespective of the area where the offence was committed.

Information may be given orally or by electronic communication. Where information is sent electronically, the provision requires it to be signed within three days for being taken on record. Section 173(2) provides that a copy of the information recorded under sub-section (1) is to be given forthwith, free of cost, to the informant or victim.

False information: The earlier page referred generally to prosecution under the IPC. From 1 July 2024, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 is the principal general penal law for new offences. Giving information known to be false with the intent described in BNS Section 217 may attract criminal liability. The exact provision depends on the facts.

How to view FIR or complaint information online

Open the official MP Police Citizen Services page.
Select "View FIR" or "Complaint Lodge/View". Use whichever service corresponds to the record you are trying to access.
Enter the details requested by the official portal. These may include login/verification details or the complaint/FIR particulars required by the service.
Save or print the result if the service provides that option. Availability of public FIR information can depend on the case/category and portal rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can I file an FIR online in Madhya Pradesh?

MP Police provides an e-FIR entry point and other online citizen services. Eligibility for e-FIR depends on the service/category made available by the police portal. For other cognizable offences, information can be given to police in accordance with Section 173 BNSS.

Does BNSS allow electronic information to police?

Yes. Section 173(1) BNSS permits information relating to a cognizable offence to be given orally or by electronic communication. Electronic information is taken on record when signed within three days.

Can a cognizable offence be reported outside the police station area where it occurred?

Section 173(1) BNSS uses the words "irrespective of the area where the offence is committed", allowing the information to be given to the officer in charge of a police station.
