Track PAN Card Application Status Online through Protean (formerly NSDL)

Use the official Protean PAN/TAN tracking facility to check the progress of a new PAN, correction or other PAN application using the acknowledgement details issued when the application was submitted.

What you need to track PAN status

Keep your PAN application acknowledgement handy. Protean states that PAN applicants receive a unique 15-digit acknowledgement number, which can be used to track the application after submission.

Steps to check PAN application status

  1. Open the official Protean PAN/TAN Application Status page.
  2. Select the relevant PAN application option shown on the tracking page.
  3. Enter your 15-digit acknowledgement number.
  4. Enter the other verification information requested on the official page.
  5. Complete the security verification/captcha, where displayed, and submit the form.
  6. Your current PAN application status will be displayed on screen.

PAN law and forms applicable from 1 April 2026

Law update: The Income-tax Department states that applications for allotment of a new PAN filed on or after 1 April 2026 are to use the new forms prescribed under the Income-tax Rules, 2026. Existing PAN and TAN numbers remain valid, and PAN applications already pending on 31 March 2026 do not need to be re-filed merely because the new law came into force.

Protean currently identifies the new PAN application forms as FN93 for an individual citizen of India, FN94 for an entity incorporated or formed in India, FN95 for an individual who is not a citizen of India, and FN96 for an entity incorporated or formed outside India. PAN correction requests use the applicable PAN Change/Correction process.

Instant e-PAN is a separate service

The Income Tax Department also provides an Instant e-PAN facility for eligible individuals who do not already have a PAN. The service is different from tracking a PAN application submitted through Protean. The current e-Filing guidance describes Instant e-PAN as a free pre-login service using Aadhaar-linked verification and DigiLocker requirements.

For PAN/TAN application queries, the Income Tax Department currently lists the Tax Information Network/Protean support number as +91-20-27218080. Protean also publishes its PAN status facility and support information on its official portal.

Frequently asked questions

Is NSDL PAN status still the correct name?

Many users still search for "NSDL PAN status," but the service provider is now Protean eGov Technologies Limited. This page therefore uses both terms so that older searches lead users to the current official Protean service.

How many digits are in the Protean PAN acknowledgement number?

Protean states that the PAN application acknowledgement contains a unique 15-digit acknowledgement number.

Do existing PAN numbers change under the Income-tax Act, 2025?

No. The Income Tax Department has clarified that existing PAN and TAN numbers remain valid. The revised forms apply to fresh applications filed from 1 April 2026.

Can I use Instant e-PAN instead?

Instant e-PAN is intended for eligible individuals who have not already been allotted a PAN and meet the current Aadhaar/DigiLocker requirements. It is not a substitute for checking an existing Protean application unless you separately qualify for and choose that service.
