How to apply for a new PAN in 2026

PAN applications are processed through authorised PAN service channels. Before applying, select the correct applicant category and keep the prescribed proof of identity, address and date of birth or constitution documents ready. Enter names, dates and other particulars exactly as supported by the documents submitted.

  1. Choose the appropriate PAN application route and applicant category.
  2. Complete the current application form and provide the required contact details.
  3. Upload or submit the prescribed supporting documents as required by the chosen mode.
  4. Complete authentication, signature or other verification steps applicable to the application mode.
  5. Pay the applicable fee where required and retain the acknowledgement or token number for tracking.
Instant e-PAN: eligible individuals who do not already have a PAN may use the Income Tax Department's free Instant e-PAN facility, subject to the Aadhaar-linked eligibility requirements shown on the official e-Filing portal.
Do not apply for a second PAN. If a PAN has already been allotted, use correction, update, reprint or e-PAN services instead of applying for another PAN.

Frequently asked questions

Are old Form 49A and Form 49AA still used for new PAN applications?

No. New PAN applications made on or after 1 April 2026 use the revised PAN forms prescribed under the current framework. Protean identifies Forms 93 and 94 for Indian applicants/entities and Forms 95 and 96 for foreign applicants/entities.

Does the 2026 form change invalidate an existing PAN?

No. Existing PAN numbers continue to remain valid. The form change concerns the application process, not the validity of PANs already allotted.

Can I get PAN instantly?

An eligible individual who has not already been allotted PAN can use the Income Tax Department's Instant e-PAN facility, subject to the eligibility and Aadhaar-linked requirements stated by the Department.
