Current legal position from 1 April 2026:
The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies to income earned from 1 April 2026 onward. Income earned up to 31 March 2026 and proceedings relating to tax years beginning before 1 April 2026 continue to be governed by the Income-tax Act, 1961 under the repeal-and-savings provisions of Section 536 of the 2025 Act. This page is therefore retained as a reference to the 1961 Act and its section numbering.
