Is Chhattisgarh FIR available online for every case?

Not necessarily. The official Chhattisgarh Police portal provides an online facility for viewing FIRs, but availability through the public search facility may depend on the nature of the case and the records made available through the portal.

The FIR search page distinguishes between Normal Cases FIR and Sensitive Cases FIR. Therefore, not every FIR should be assumed to be publicly downloadable through the same search facility.

If you cannot find an FIR online, it does not necessarily mean that an FIR has not been registered. For authoritative information, contact the concerned police station.

What information is required to search an FIR?

For the general View FIR search:

  • District
  • Police Station
  • From Date
  • To Date

For FIR Status Search:

  • District
  • Police Station
  • FIR Number
  • Year

FIR law in Chhattisgarh - Section 173 BNSS

The law relating to registration of information concerning cognizable offences changed with the introduction of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS).

The BNSS came into force on 1 July 2024, replacing the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, subject to the statutory transition provisions.

Section 173 BNSS deals with information relating to cognizable offences. It provides that information concerning a cognizable offence may be given orally or by electronic communication, irrespective of the area where the offence was committed. Where information is given electronically, it is taken on record after it is signed by the person giving it within three days.

Accordingly, older webpages that explain FIR registration solely by referring to Section 154 of the CrPC should be updated to reflect the present legal framework under Section 173 BNSS.

Difference between FIR Search and FIR Status Search

Facility Main purpose Information required
View FIR Search and view/download available FIRs District, Police Station, From Date and To Date
FIR Status Search Check the status of a particular FIR District, Police Station, FIR Number and Year

The View FIR facility is useful when you want to locate an FIR within a particular date range, while FIR Status Search is more convenient when you already know the FIR number and year.

What if I cannot find my FIR online?

  1. Confirm that the district is correct.
  2. Confirm that you selected the correct police station.
  3. Check the FIR number and year if using FIR Status Search.
  4. Try the correct date range when using View FIR.
  5. Check whether the matter may fall within a category whose FIR details are not publicly displayed.
  6. Contact the concerned police station for authoritative information.

The Chhattisgarh Police FIR Status Search page advises users to contact the concerned Station House Officer for detailed and authoritative information.
