Renewal or Reissue: what should you apply for?
For an Indian passport, the Passport Seva service is generally called "Re-issue of Passport". Reissue may be requested when the existing passport has expired or is nearing expiry, its pages are exhausted, personal particulars need to be changed, or the passport has been lost, stolen or damaged.
How to apply for passport reissue online
- Register or sign in. Open Passport Seva, create an account if necessary, confirm your registered email address and sign in.
- Select the service. From the Services area, choose Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport.
- Choose Re-issue. Select the correct reason, such as validity expiry, pages exhausted, change in particulars, lost passport or damaged passport.
- Complete and submit the application. Enter personal, family, address and existing-passport details carefully and submit the form.
- Pay and schedule the appointment. Use the portal's payment/appointment workflow and select the available PSK or POPSK as applicable.
- Visit the centre. Attend on the scheduled date with the required originals and one set of self-attested photocopies, subject to the document requirements for your case.
- Track the application. After submission at the centre, use the official Track Application Status facility on Passport Seva.
Documents for passport reissue
The exact list depends on the reason for reissue, applicant age/category, address change, ECR/Non-ECR status and whether the application is Normal or Tatkaal. The official Passport Seva Document Advisor should therefore be treated as the controlling checklist.
- Existing/old passport in original, where available.
- Self-attested photocopies required by the Document Advisor.
- Current address proof when required, particularly where the present address differs from the existing passport.
- Supporting proof for any requested change in personal particulars.
- Additional documents prescribed for lost, stolen or damaged passports and for Tatkaal applications.
