Passport Online India: Apply, Reissue, Tatkaal, PCC & Track Status

Use the official Passport Seva system of the Ministry of External Affairs to apply for a fresh passport, obtain a re-issued passport, choose Tatkaal where eligible, apply for a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC), book an appointment and track an application online.

Important 2026 update: Passport service fees were revised with effect from 1 July 2026. Check the current fee shown on Passport Seva before payment, because the amount depends on the service, booklet size, age/category and whether Tatkaal is selected.

Passport Renewal / Reissue Online

For Passport Seva purposes, an existing passport generally requires re-issue when a new booklet is needed. Common reasons include expiry or approaching expiry, exhaustion of visa pages, change in personal particulars, damage, loss or theft, and other situations covered by the Passport Rules and portal instructions.

When applying for re-issue, select the correct reason and use the official Document Advisor because document requirements vary according to the reason for re-issue, applicant category and police-verification status.

Tatkaal Passport Application

Tatkaal is an expedited passport service for eligible cases. Selection of Tatkaal does not remove the requirement to establish identity, address, date of birth and other eligibility conditions. The applicant must comply with the additional documents and verification requirements applicable to the case.

Appointment tip: Passport Seva publishes Passport Office-wise opening times for Tatkaal appointments. Availability can change, so check the official appointment page rather than relying on third-party schedules.

Documents Required & Police Verification

There is no single document list that fits every passport application. Requirements depend on whether the application is fresh or re-issue, Normal or Tatkaal, adult or minor, and whether there are changes in name, address, marital status, date of birth or other particulars.

Use Passport Seva's official Document Advisor for your exact category. Police verification may be required before or after passport issuance depending on the applicable rules and the facts of the application.

How to Track Passport Application Status Online

Passport application status can be checked online after submission. On the official tracking page, select the application type and enter the file number and date of birth. The same official ecosystem also provides information on dispatch and related application progress.

Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) Online

Passport Seva also provides Police Clearance Certificate services for eligible Indian passport holders for purposes such as employment, immigration, visa, residence and other prescribed uses. Apply through the official portal, pay the applicable PCC fee and attend the required appointment/verification process.

Because police verification requirements differ by case, applicants should follow the instructions generated by the portal rather than assume that a previous passport verification will automatically satisfy a new PCC request.

Applicable Passport Law in India

Indian passport issuance is governed principally by the Passports Act, 1967 and the Passports Rules, 1980, as amended from time to time. Passport Seva also publishes statutory notifications and procedural updates, including amendments affecting fees and documentary requirements.
