How to pay a traffic challan through Virtual Court
- Open the official Virtual Courts portal. Select the relevant State or Department and choose Proceed Now.
- Search for the case. Use any available search option: mobile number, CNR number, party name, or challan/vehicle number.
- Open the case details. Select View for the matching record and check the vehicle, party and challan particulars carefully.
- Choose the appropriate action. If the case is eligible, select the option to pay the proposed fine or request to contest the case.
- Complete verification. Follow the portal's OTP and, where required, vehicle-detail verification process.
- Make payment or submit the contest request. For payment, follow the official payment-gateway instructions. If contesting, the portal provides the assigned court details and further directions.
- Save the acknowledgement. Download or print the receipt after successful payment. A paid receipt can also be reprinted through the case details where the service is available.
Current legal framework
Road-traffic offences and penalties are primarily governed by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as amended from time to time, including major changes made by the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019. The Act contains a dedicated chapter dealing with offences, penalties and procedure.
Where a traffic matter is taken to court, criminal-court procedure is now governed by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS), which came into force on 1 July 2024, subject to the applicable special-law procedure and the facts of the case.

Paying the fine vs. contesting the case
Pay the fine only after checking the challan details and confirming that you intend to accept the available settlement/payment option. If you dispute the alleged violation, vehicle identity, party details or other material particulars, use the available request to contest option rather than making a payment merely to close the screen.
When a contest request is successfully processed, the Virtual Courts system can display the court to which the matter is transferred and the relevant date. Follow that acknowledgement and any subsequent official court notice.
Receipt and payment problems
After successful online payment, the portal provides a receipt. If the payment has succeeded but the receipt was not saved, search the case again, open the case details and use the available reprint facility after OTP verification.
Frequently asked questions
Can I search with only my vehicle or challan number?
Yes, the Virtual Courts interface lists challan/vehicle number among its search methods, along with mobile number, CNR number and party name.
Can I contest instead of paying?
Where the option is available for the case, you may request to contest. The portal then provides the assigned court information and further directions after verification.
Will I receive a receipt after online payment?
Yes. The official Virtual Courts FAQ states that a receipt is issued after successful payment and can be downloaded or printed.
What if my challan is not found?
Check the entered details, try another available search method, or use the issuing authority's official portal/Parivahan eChallan service. Some challans may not be routed to Virtual Courts.
