Current Law on Birth Registration

Birth registration in India is governed by the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. The Act was substantially amended by the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023, with the amended provisions coming into force on 1 October 2023.

The amended law expressly supports digital registration and electronic delivery of birth and death certificates. For a person born on or after 1 October 2023, the birth certificate is also designated by the amended Act as a document for proving the date and place of birth for specified purposes under the Act.
