Pay Motor Vehicle Tax Online through VAHAN

Use the official VAHAN Citizen Services portal to pay eligible motor vehicle tax, road tax or related tax dues online and obtain an electronic receipt.

Tax rates are State/UT specific

VAHAN is the online service platform. The actual vehicle-tax rate, payment period, surcharge, exemption and penalty are governed by the applicable State or Union Territory taxation law and notifications.

This page is a practical guide to the current VAHAN vehicle-tax payment workflow. Portal availability and the services offered for a particular registration number depend on the State/UT and registering authority.

VAHAN Citizen Services, operated under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), currently lists online payment of monthly, quarterly or yearly motor vehicle tax for commercial vehicles, along with other fee and tax services.

Use only official Government portals For tax payment, open the official VAHAN service yourself. Do not enter an OTP, card details, UPI PIN or banking password on an unknown website received by SMS, WhatsApp or email.

Who Can Use VAHAN to Pay Vehicle Tax?

Online availability varies by State/UT, RTO and vehicle record. The current VAHAN Citizen Services platform specifically advertises monthly, quarterly and yearly motor vehicle tax payment for commercial vehicles. Other tax or fee functions may also appear depending on the vehicle and registering authority.

Typical transport vehicles may include taxis, auto-rickshaws, goods vehicles, trucks, buses, lorries and other commercial or permit vehicles. Do not assume that every vehicle category or every State follows the same payment cycle or tax calculation.

Current Legal Position on Motor Vehicle Tax

Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 - India Code Official consolidated Central legislation relating to motor vehicles.

Vehicle Tax and Permit Renewal Are Different

Payment of motor vehicle tax does not by itself renew an expired permit. A transport vehicle may have separate requirements for permit renewal, fitness, insurance and other statutory compliance. VAHAN provides separate services for permit renewal and fitness-related applications where enabled.

Practical check before paying Confirm the tax period due, validity of the permit and fitness certificate, and any pending transaction. This helps avoid paying the wrong period or repeating a payment that is still being processed.

If Payment Is Debited but the Receipt Is Not Generated

Do not immediately pay again. Check the VAHAN service for a pending transaction or reprint e-receipt facility. Preserve the bank reference, transaction ID and any acknowledgement displayed by the payment gateway. If the issue remains unresolved, contact the concerned RTO/State Transport Department or the help facility shown on the official portal.

Official VAHAN User Manual Includes Pay Vehicle Tax, Check Pending Transaction and Reprint E-Receipt services.

Why the Payable Amount Can Differ Between States

States and Union Territories use their own taxation statutes and notifications. Tax can depend on factors such as vehicle class, seating or carrying capacity, laden or unladen weight, vehicle cost, age, fuel type, use, permit category and payment period. Concessions, exemptions, interest and penalties may also differ.

For example, official notifications published for different States rely on their respective State motor vehicle taxation enactments. This is why an old generic "all India road-tax rate" should not be used to calculate the amount payable for a particular vehicle.
