Births in Karnataka are registered by the competent Registrar of Births and Deaths under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, as amended by the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023. The 2023 amendment came into force on 1 October 2023.
How to check a Karnataka birth certificate or registration status
- Open the official Karnataka eJanMa portal.

- Select the relevant birth-related service.
Depending on the record and local authority, the portal may offer search, certificate, application-status, correction or name-inclusion services. - Enter the requested registration details.
Keep the registration number, date of birth, place of birth, parents' details and any acknowledgement/application number available. - Verify the result and follow the portal instructions.
If an online certificate or status is available, view or download it. If the record is not available online, contact the Registrar for the place where the birth was registered.
Correction, delayed registration and name inclusion
A birth record cannot always be altered through a simple online status page. Correction of entries, delayed registration and inclusion of a child's name are governed by the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, applicable rules and the procedure followed by the jurisdictional Registrar.
- Name inclusion: Where the child's name was not entered at registration, the Act provides a mechanism for later entry subject to the prescribed procedure.
- Correction or cancellation: Errors may require documentary proof and approval by the competent registering authority.
- Delayed registration: Registrations made after the prescribed period may require additional permission, documents or fees depending on the delay.
